KAOLINITE DEPOSITE OF VARGEM DOS ÓCULOS QUADRILATERO FERRÍFERO, MG.The kaolin deposit of Vargem dos Óculos is situated in the northwestern part of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, at Moeda Syncline trough.The litological heterogeneity of this lithostratigraphic unit results in a differential weathering.Such process leads to the formation of depressions and slopes flanked by itabirite crests.The kaolinite deposit is located in one of these depressions.Based on morphological, mineralogical and chemical studies at several scales in open cut mine, drill holes and surface samples a weathering profile have been established.The profile comprises two unite wich overlap each other in structural unconformity.The lower unit shows relict structures of the bedrock at the base and pedoturbations indications on the top suggest an in situ evolved lateritic profile.The upper unit shows unlike structural characteristic wich indicate an allocthonous origin.Deferrugmization and silicification due to hydromorfic conditions leads to degradation of the allocthonous lateritic fragments thus inducing expressive kaolinitic fades development.
