Resumo

Dieulafoy's lesion is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening source of gastrointestinal bleeding, named after the French surgeon who characterized it in 1898. 1 Dieulafoy G Exulceratio simplex. L'intervention chirurgicale dans les hématéméses foudroyantes consécutives á l'exulceration simple de l'estomac. Bull Acad Méd. 1898; 49 (quoted from reference 2): 49-84 Google Scholar The typical lesion is an abnormally large submucosal muscular artery that protrudes through a solitary, small mucosal defect, most commonly in the proximal stomach. It ruptures spontaneously and bleeds massively for unclear reasons. Microscopic examination of the lesion reveals no evidence of aneurysm formation, atherosclerosis, arteritis, or surrounding inflammation. Although the original descriptions and early reports were of lesions in the proximal stomach, 1 Dieulafoy G Exulceratio simplex.
