ResumoThe literature related to antithrombotic prophylaxis in patients with prosthetic heart valves is often unclear. Many of the early investigations were with small numbers of patients. Many were retrospective or prospective without controls. None were randomized to prophylaxis versus control groups and few were randomized to different prophylactic regimens. The reporting of events, particularly early events, was inconsistent. The level of anticoagulation in the early literature cannot be estimated in terms of an international normalized ratio (INR).
