(American Naturalist 193:E41–E56), Hong Qian noted that our interpretation of standardized effect size–mean phylogenetic distance/mean nearest taxon distance (SES-MPD/MNTD) corresponds to that of net relatedness index/nearest taxon index (NRI/NTI) metrics, commonly used in the literature, and that this could cause a misunderstanding for readers. Indeed, NRI/NTI metrics are simply the SES-MPD/MNTD values multiplied by −1. In our case, we did multiply our SES-MPD/MNTD values by −1 but retained the usage of SES-MPD/MNTD instead of NRI/NTI, following the authors of our main method (DAMOCLES, or dynamic assembly model of colonization, local extinction, and speciation; Pigot and Etienne 2015). The confusion stems from the fact that this explanation (multiplication by −1) was lost during the revisions, and neither us nor the reviewers and editors noticed it. Therefore, to avoid any further confusion, the SES metrics (MPD and MNTD) used in this study should be read as multiplied by −1. We regret the mistake. In addition, after rereading our article, we also noticed that in the introduction (p. E42) a word was changed from the original (“away”) to its opposite (“toward”). This error could produce some confusion; thus, the sentence should read as follows:Accordingly, local assemblages would tend to increasingly cluster away from their region of origin, with these assemblages being composed mostly by closely related species that exhibit high niche similarity (Miller et al. 2013; Ndirebe et al. 2013).We regret the error.
