ResumoThe splenosis is an implantation of ectopic splenic tissue, which occurs after a trauma or splenic surgery. It was described in dogs and humans for the first time in 1883 and 1896, respectively. This condition is considered rare, since only a few reports are found in human medicine and veterinary literature.A mongrel bitch, 6 years old was seen at the surgical department of the Hospital Universitário de Medicina Veterinária Professor Firmino Marsico Filho. The dog had been diagnosed by ultrasound with left hydronephrosis and increased uterine volume suggestive of pyometra. It was decided to perform a laparotomy for left nephrectomy and ovariohysterectomy (OH).At laparotomy were observed deformities and multiple foci of splenic tissue in omentum and uterine ligament. The material was removed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, sectioned, stained with hematoxylineosin technique [HE] and analyzed histopathologically.Histopathological examination concluded extramedullary hematopoiesis in spleen and splenosis. It was concluded that splenosis may be an incidental finding during a laparotomy and often comes from splenic trauma. The objective of this study is to report a case of splenosis in a bitch with hydronephrosis and suppurative metritis.
