Resumo

Significance CCM presidential candidate John Magufuli easily defeated his rival Edward Lowassa, who was running under the UKAWA opposition banner. However, the controversial annulment of Zanzibar's polls mars the perceived legitimacy of CCM's otherwise comfortable win, setting the new president up for some unwelcome first-term distractions. Impacts The end of the Kitwete era bodes well for improving soured relations with Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Tanzania's new leadership will set the pace for its involvement in East African Community initiatives. However, post-election issues may quell Rwandan hopes that a new Tanzanian leadership could take on a regional peace role vis. Burundi.
