ResumoKarl Scheffler’s 1913 essay on the work of Heinrich Tessenow praises the architect’s reforming spirit on the basis of the housing and the “Festspielhaus” that he designed for the garden suburb of Hellerau near Dresden. In contrast to the speculative housing that boomed in the German cities in the late nineteenth century, Tessenow’s work is modest, restrained, and grounded on simple craftsmanship rather than vulgar decorative devices. Scheffler traces Tessenow’s biography from his youth in Rostock, his architectural education in Munich and Dresden, and his employment as an assistant in the architectural practices of Martin Dülfer and Paul Schultze-Naumburg. In spite of the great difference in scale between the modest housing and the monumental “Festspielhaus,” Scheffler sees them as united by such qualities as “living measure,” “resounding proportion,” and “profane naturalism.”
