Bei Wasserzusatz wandeln sich die Schichten erst in Röhren und schließlich in Ringe um, eine Ultraschallbehandlung überführt die Röhren wiederum in Schichten. Die Nanoröhren und -schichten wirken als Wellenleiter und ändern die Richtung von einfallenden Laserstrahlen.
