ResumoAbstract It is now clear that only through patient study of the minutiae of the style of particular poets and groups can any valid conclusions be formed with regard to phenomena such as culteranismo, conceptismo and the Baroque. For this purpose Pedro Espinosa stands out as one of the most interesting figures of the Golden Age, like Janus looking both forward and backward. Inheriting the Italianate forms and poetic traditions of the XVIth century, he found them devitalized and in need of renewal. Whether they wished it or not, the successors of Garcilaso were dedicated to the task, which Herrera voluntarily assumed, of seeking always “nuevos modos de hermosura”.
