Each spoonerism is treated as the punchline to a riddle, so that "What did Rapunzel say to the filthy giant?" is answered on the verso with "You need to shake a tower!" The semantic pathways sometimes get a little muddled, with the jokes relying a great deal on the illustrations for meaning (the two single-page spoonerism scenarios on the frontispiece and half-title page are actually the most cohesive and successful of all), but the tongue-twisting entertainment, visual emphasis, and the undemanding reading will nonetheless make this a popular choice and playful curricular element (occasionally sophisticated vocabulary adds challenge). Agee's black-and-white (well, really more slate-and-ivory) illustrations evince his usual thick, soft strokes and carefully controlled geometry that gentle his cartoonish comedy. This will be a useful step up for kids who'd like some additional wordplay in their riddles, and it could make for a particularly entertaining collective readaloud, with extra points for additional reciprocal mangling. The final page lists the book's spoonerisms along with their unspoonered versions. Copyright © 2006 The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois
