ResumoDuring the year 2013, Italy experienced a change in the government coalition with Enrico Letta taking over Mario Monti’s prime minister mandate in May. The new government continued in the efforts to restore fiscal sustainability and improve competitiveness and long-term growth already started under the previous government. In this context, developments in environmental policy have focused on the promotion of renewable energy and a number of initiatives geared towards transforming Italy towards a low-carbon and green economy. The 2013 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Environmental Performance Review for Italy highlights some important achievements such as a significant reduction on air emissions as well as progress in the areas of waste management and biodiversity conservation, water quality improvement, and an overall consolidation of environmental legislation and policy ( ).
