ResumoIn Reply. —Dr Tauer and Dr Goodwin have misread my Contempo article. I appreciate the opportunity to correct their misreadings. Tauer is correct in saying that research using human embryos produced by in vitro fertilization without transfer to a human uterus was found acceptable from an ethical point of view by the EAB in 1979, 1 but my article did not claim that the Human Embryo Research Panel was the first to approve such research. Rather, it was first "to approve funding for the production of human embryos for research purposes." 2 This is a different matter. The 1994 Human Embryo Research Panel Report states specifically that one of its charges was "to provide advice as to areas that: (1) are acceptable for federal funding." It also states that "[t]he Panel supports funding of certain areas of preimplantation embryo research within the framework of the guidelines specified below." 1 In
