Abstract A 2 acre block of 1.5-2 m tall Scots pine were used to evaluated efficacy of insecticides against first generation crawlers. Three randomly chosen, infested, single-tree replicates were used for each of the 4 treatments presented. A KWH misrblower operating at 420 ml/min was used to deliver insecticides as thorough-coverage, foliar sprays May 23 when all crawlers had hatched. Ambient temperature was 75°F (24°C) with partly cloudy skies and 5 kph (3 mph) breeze. Sampling was conducted 7 days post-treatment by detaching needle fascicles, placing them in coin envelopes, and transporting them to the laboratory. Fascicles were inspected for living and dead crawlers and settled nymphs. The first 100 individuals encountered on 3 or more fascicles were used in the evaluation.
