Status Report Thylias Moss (bio) a courageous scientific imagination was needed to realize fully that not behavior of bodies, but the behavior of something between them, that is, the field, may be essential for ordering and understanding events. —A. Einstein & Leopold Infeld: The Evolution of Physics I have one of those faces, human chameleon, in the presence of my killer, I become what he needs to kill, supreme latex, my face knows every shade of beige and brown, what is inherent anyway is all inside, I don't go to Ludlow's Smokers' Palace with my own face in my eyes which look for him, his needs which are not bound by race though roam in it, sometimes luxuriate because of what he knows of the exotic, how it should excite him, how it is not ordinary, imported Turkish delight, I pass as whatever is necessary, I really am passing fancy, passing fantasy, seven with one blow, the tailor's little one-smack fly swatter gesture, in me some African, some Asian, Swede, three chicks with one machete, brunette at the roots, the follicles' dark dedication, eyes almost aqua, with wheat-streaked iris, nut meat skin, finest macadamia, Chaka khan—it's all in me—every woman he ever needs to kill, one of the many purposes of convergence, one of the fulfillments, an investment, tie up humanity, keep it occupied in her, don't forget a knot at the end of the threads or they pull right through, secure nothing, a tapestry sewn with worms, good-for-nothing binding worms, just tunneling through my humanity, I'm already dead, come, worms, come, eat, worms, eat, a knot makes a difference, blood clots to keep it from flowing away if a dam breaks, dam skin, holding me back, keeping it all together, packaged, three major bloodlines, arteries of being, braid and braid and braid all day, long enough braid to be loved in Sri Lanka, what happened to all the old nun hair, snip-happy devotion, there are so many callings, so much calling and responding, answering to, revering, triracial, triumvirate, troika, trinity, trivial, the blend doesn't get in my killer's way, doesn't hang him up, trip him up, at Ludlow's the finest Arabica blends, finest Robusta, a little Costa Rica, French roast kava, Jamaican blue mountain, nutty and woody aromas of Sulawesi, the cream swirl on the top of the coffee is a distant galaxy disappointing because it is so small, disappointing because it goes down my killer's throat like nothing, nothing else goes down his throat like that, down the hatch like that, then gets distilled into killer urine, it has to be like that, biological cycles, but that makes it hard to get excited about convergence, almost anything can come together, there may be a short-lived kiss of duress, there are couples who regurgitate a little bit when [End Page 898] they kiss, share partial digestion, like a mama bird and her birdies, they may not stay together, may fly the cooped up feeling of a clogged pipe, the food going up and down the throat to help them fall in love, the act of coming together can lead to collapse, can lead to identity confusion, my killer undoes the effects of too much understanding, the excesses of appreciating so many blanket statements, we are the world, countermeasure: he takes me back to basics, he kills just one woman, in the news just one woman of color, color of compendium Thylias Moss Thylias Moss teaches at the University of Michigan.
