Resumo

Bangers and mash is the first solid meal that Keith Hern was able to eat after completing chemotherapy and radiotherapy for throat cancer. Hern begins with this encouraging episode, then goes back to explain how he found a lump in his neck and his initial diagnosis. He describes this moment as “instant mental meltdown”, expressing perfectly the confusion of emotions experienced by any cancer patient. I was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer 5 years ago and felt exactly the same. Hern's mind is filled with questions from the expected, “Will I survive? Why me?”, to the mundane, “Must mend that fence when I get back”; I remember wondering if I would get the chance to wear the new summer dress I had just bought.
