In 1598 Pope Clement VIII Aldobrandini inherited a small villa, the Belvedere,1 located on the northwest side of a hill rising above the town of Frascati. Subsequently, the pope presented this villa to his nephew, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, as a reward for the latter's role in the Church's reacquisition of Ferrara.2 A rebuilding program of the old villa was begun in May, 1601 under the direction of Giacomo della Porta, who was succeeded, after his death in 1602, by Giovanni Fontana and Carlo Maderno. By 1611, almost the entire rebuilding of the villa had been completed (Figs. 1, 2, and 3).3
