SHORT NOTES THE WEEPING OF JACOB, HOS. XII 5A In his Studien ?una Hoseabuche (1935, pp. 94f.) NYBERG proposes a translation of Hos. xii 5a, "und das Numen, der Engel kampfte und siegte. Er (Jacob) weinte und flehte um Erbarmen." The weak point is here the unparalleled "the Numen, the Angel", and the assumption that Jacob's weeping is a sign of defeat. DE BOER 1), who has given an interpretation of the passage, which is very similar to that of NYBERG, and which I think is right, gives another understanding of the weeping, to which I think I can add
