Resumo

This article aimed to examine the role played by the sports in the development of Vitória city in the early years of its modernization. It analyzed the content of two of the main newspapers at that time: A Gazeta and Diário da Manhã. The investigation has focused the issues published between 1920 and 1930, given the significant investments in sports made in the state of Espírito Santo during that period. The conclusion is that sports practice had been associated with the idea that sports would act in the formation of a healthy youth and played an important role in the race improvement, considered essential aspects at that time for the city under transformation.
