ResumoSummaryIt is an old world genus, consisting of two cultivated and two wild species besides a wild new world species. Significant heterosis has also been reported in this genus and is being commercially exploited. It is an insect pollinated crop. Isolation is needed to prevent out crossing by insects when hybrid seed is produced by open pollination. Hybrid seed is produced commercially by the hand pollination or by defloration, the manual removal of male flowers from the female parent so that all of its open pollinated seed will be hybrid.Key Words: Loofahfloral biologycrop biologyheterosishybrid seed production
