These changes could be dependent on the specific strain as well as on the disease´s progression time. Material and methods: In this study a strain of M. tuberculosis (LAM3) was isolated from a patient with meningitis, subsequently, BALB/c male mice were infected though the trachea with H37Rv and LAM3 strains. These mice were later on sacrificed at different days following infection (1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 60, 120). Mice brains were obtained and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, argentic stain method of del Rio-Hortega, electron microscopy was used for BBB and CFS-BB, Ziehl-Neelsen and PCR and immunohistochemestry was used for citoquine detection (IL1-β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, TGF-β, IL-4). Results: Neuronal alterations were observed in the frontal cortex and the hippocampus with H37Rv and LAM3 (cell death, disorganization and eosinophilic degeneration). There were no CFU growth in the brain for neither strain, though PCR was positive for LAM3. The citoquines were positive in ependymal cells, endothelial cells and in choroid plexuses for both strains: IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-4 y TGF-B. LAM3 expressed IFN-γ with greater intensity. Structural abnormalities (cytoplasmic vacuolation, intercellular separation and necrosis) were shown at the Blood-CSF barrier for both LAM3 and H37Rv. Conclusion: Concluding by these findings that neuronal abnormalities in the frontal cortex, the hippocampus and the Blood-CSF barrier are present in post-infection with M tuberculosis, these findings being more severe in the LAM3 strain than in H37Rv and possibly mediated by citoquine presence.
