Adverse event versus medication error: perceptions of nursing staff acting in intensive care

ResumoObjective:To analyze the role of nursing staff in administering medications in the intensive care unit.Method: This was a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach developed with 29 nurses, from June 1 to October 31, 2011.The data were collected through observations and participatory interview.Results: The study showed that 48% of professionals did not know to distinguish between medication errors and adverse event, 100% of the staff has limited adverse events only to clinical patient changes, the primary attitude of the nursing staff (42% of nurses and 42 % of technicians) in an error is communication.Conclusion: The study participants have little knowledge about the concepts of medication errors and adverse events.Descriptors:
