Resumo

Speech style is not a fixed element of an individual's linguistic usage and may change depending on the social setting and the non-linguistic behaviour of the communicator's conversational partners. Even straightforward acoustic parameters such as pitch, loudness, utterance rate, and articulation rate are influenced by addressees’ behavioural response. Very intriguingly, behavioural responses on the other are influenced by varying speech styles. Using a longitudinal design with two measurement points, the current study aims to examine the reciprocal relationships between linguistic variation, non-linguistic behaviour, and message related factors in a sample of adults. A modified matched-guise technique employing two English accents (Standard American and Chicano) is used to analyze the effect of linguistic variation on non-linguistic behaviour while Praat (acoustic analysis software) is used to systemically examine the influence of later on the former. Study variables are hypothesized in a way to form a vicious cycle. Paired sample t-test will be carried out to confirm if there is a reciprocal relation between linguistic variation and behavioural response.
