Es geht auch ohne Metall: Die erste übergangsmetallfreie Kupplungsreaktion vom Suzuki-Typ wurde mit Tetrabutylammoniumbromid (TBAB) als Additiv in Wasser durchgeführt (siehe Schema). Mit einer großen Bandbreite an Arylbromiden konnten so die Produkte in hoher Ausbeute erhalten werden.
