Resumo

Osogbo owes its initial prominence to the assembalage of cultural celebrities (Uli Bieur, Duro Ladipo, Yemi Elebuibon and others) who jointly raised the cultural awareness and exploited the artefacts of the town. Although most of these celebrities are either dead or have migrated, the annual Osun Osogbo festival continues to provide an enduring link between old and new artists. The town has benefited immensely from the various government development programmes such as the decentralization of industrial locations, the creation of Industrial Development Centers (IDCs) and the location of governmental institutions as agents for inducing growth. However, the town demonstrates traits of underdevelopment in terms of its employment profile, occupational traits and planning ability and capacity. Efforts to ensure the liveability of the city via the provision of an appropriate planning infrastructure, including a current master plan, provision of housing estates, transportation networks, potable water and the like are being made. The future of physical planning in the city cannot be easily divorced from that of its neigbours. Eventually a regional plan for the area, with Osogbo playing a pivotal role worthy of its size, importance and expectations would be desirable.
