Abstract In spite of the claim that some people encounter Elvis Presley at or around the time of his death through psychic experiences or that his death was a hoax, Elvis is dead. Make no mistake about that! Contrary to all the "sightings" of Elvis and the many references about his being here or there, he died in Memphis, Tennessee in August of 1977. Since then hundreds of thousands of fans have continued to make pilgrimages to Graceland, the late singer's home, often at great financial sacrifice to themselves and to their families. For Presley fans Graceland has become a shrine sacred to the memory of their idol (1). Indeed, the mania that has emerged and perpetuated over the last 13 years has turned into the most lucrative tourist attraction for the city of Memphis.
