Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Biomedical Research

This has been an eventful year for the Journal. We completed our transition to all-electronic reviewing; changed the primary format for the Journal for the future to the electronic version; moved our operation to Asia; and have advanced our campaign for the characterization of antibodies used in scientific work. I am pleased to report that we have so far succeeded on all of these fronts. The Journal began electronic review in May, 2004, by using the ManuscriptCentral, version 3 software. This software is shared with many other journals, which has the advantage that it is kept current and updated frequently, but the disadvantage that it is not engineered specifically to our needs. The transition has been helped by the patience of our reviewers and authors, not to mention the Editors, but in general has been a success. We now are reaching decisions on new papers in an average time of around 30 days from submission. This is about five days faster than our paper manuscript turnaround time, and about as fast as our previous “Rapid Review” track. Because most of the advantage of Rapid Review was obtained by using overnight mail for communication, and electronic review is faster still, we have dropped the Rapid Review path, as all of our manuscripts are now essentially handled in this way. We still permit submission of figures in hardcopy format, but because the Journal ultimately uses digital reproduction, it is to the advantage of the authors to take control of this conversion themselves, and submit the images in digital format. Few are choosing the hardcopy format, and in the future we expect that keeping this option open will no longer be necessary or even desirable. Many authors and reviewers are still a bit confused about the quality of the images in digital format. If authors follow the directions on the website, and submit their figures in TIF format at 300 dpi resolution, all of the resolution of their images will be available in the 300 dpi PDF files used by the JCN website. One recurring problem is that many reviewers still do not know how to assess figures in an electronic format. They print them out on a laser printer and then wonder why the resolution is so poor. The answer, of course, is that printed figures are degraded both by the software that converts them to print format, and then again by the printer itself. The only way to evaluate the resolution of images in an electronic format is to blow them up until one pixel in the image occupies one pixel on your screen. Thus, if you have a typical 1024 pixel horizontal resolution, and the JCN page is 2000 pixels, you must blow up the image until it is about twice the width of your monitor. At anything less than this, you will not be able to appreciate its full resolution. In practice, this occurs when you magnify an image in Adobe Reader to about 300% or 400%. As you may guess, a large screen format with at least 1600 dpi resolution will allow you to see almost an entire page width at one sweep. This is valuable, and a good justification for adding one to your budget. The Journal has also quietly moved this year to the electronic version being the primary format. In the past, the highest resolution version available was the printed page, with about 300 dpi resolution, compared to our website with about 150 dpi resolution. During 2005, we eliminated the low resolution (150 dpi) PDF format both for the ManuscriptCentral website and for new papers stored on the Wiley InterScience website that accesses published JCN papers. Thus, JCN becomes one of the first journals in which the electronic version is at the full resolution of the highest quality printed page. This change was necessitated by the fact that so few of our readers now access our Journal in hardcopy. Similarly, JCN is now available electronically back to volume 1, number 1, in 1891. Libraries can subscribe to this archive for a one-time fee, and we urge our readers to ask their libraries to purchase this access, so that they and their colleagues will be able to view electronically papers published in JCN over our full 114-year lifespan. Meanwhile in an effort to improve quality of the print version of the Journal and control costs, the print version of the Journal is now manufactured in Singapore. The new printing presses use more vivid inks, and we should have greater control over the final images. Printed versions of the Journal will be airlifted back to the US for distribution in North America (US and Canada), but copies for the rest of the world will be mailed directly from Singapore. Finally, we continue to be engaged in a battle to insure that all of our papers provide full information on all antibodies that are used. We have published several editorials on this topic, but continue to see papers in which authors have not given sufficient attention to this issue. Antibodies are unique biological agents, and each one requires considerable thought and care to be sure that it actually is recognizing the molecule it is thought to bind. We have found many examples of antibodies that stained only artifact, even after satisfying careful control studies, and have published several retractions of such papers over the last few years. Many more antibodies are used with less stringent controls, and often none at all. It is for this reason that it is critical at all times to provide full information on the source (manufacturer, catalog or log number, species the antibody was raised in, and exact structure of the immunizing antigen), characterization (i.e., what the antibody sees on immunoblot), and controls for each antibody that is used in each paper. We are still far from that goal, but are asking for, and in most cases we are enlisting the enthusiastic help of, all our authors for this task. Lastly, each year the four-year terms of one-quarter of the members of our Editorial Board come to an end. The Editors vote new seats on the Board to recognize the most valuable contributors to our Journal. This process allows us to bring in new members to the Board, and often we bring back previous members who remain active in the affairs of the Journal. This year, the Editors voted to retain three members: Noboru Mizuno, Kathleen Rockland, and Heinz Wässle, who have been among the most frequent and valuable reviewers and authors for the Journal. Six new members will join our ranks: Nell Cant, Asla Pitkänen, Jean-François Bernard, Michael V. Sofroniew, Dick R. Nässel, and Ida Llewellyn-Smith. Each has also been a frequent and valued reviewer and author. At the same time, we want to thank six members who are retiring (at least for now) from the Board. Ben Barres, David Ryugo, Karl Herrup, Larry Swanson, Paul Taghert, and John Trojanowski has each been a loyal and valued colleague who contributed much to the Journal.
