Verschiedene Carborane wirken hemmend auf die aktiven Zentren von CAs, wobei die Einführung einer Sulfamidgruppe und anderer Substituenten zu Verbindungen mit hoher Selektivität für das krebsspezifische Isozym IX führt. Kristallstrukturen mit den Carboranen im aktiven Zentrum liefern Informationen für das strukturbasierte Design spezifischer Inhibitoren.
