Candlewick, 2021 [40p] Trade ed. ISBN 9781536209471 $16.99 Reviewed from digital galleys R Gr. 2-3 Speeding his pickup along the tree branches of Whiskers Hollow, Bear smacks right into an acorn, busting the light in his trusty old truck. Taking off again, he stops by his pal Rabbit's place, asking Rabbit to help him find a new light, despite Rabbit's current need for lunch. They pick up Mouse, who manages to put aside his usual anxiety about just about everything to tag along, and Donkey too, because if anyone is going to direct them to Elephant's Old Junk Tree, it'll be Donkey. When they get there, nearly everyone finds something they need—Rabbit finds a vending machine, Mouse finds a caution sign, and Donkey find a compass—but still no light for Bear's truck until a bit of chaos shifts enough junk to reveal the perfect headlight. Even with their specific traits, the animals here aren't particularly memorable, but the world of Whiskers Hollow certainly is, with Light's intricate pencilwork and hatching revealing a magical, miniature world and a visual feast à la Richard Scarry for young readers to pore over. Spindly branches of various size reach through the pages, creating a rollercoaster effect as Bear and co. go zipping along, and the busyness of the linework maintains chaotic but controlled scenes. Fans ready to graduate from Tabor's Fox picture books (Fox and the Bike Ride, BCCB 10/17) will appreciate the energetic verve of this foursome.
