São Thomé das Letras is the most important center of Brazilian mining of quartzite plated or clad, used as coating material and ornamentation.The extraction is performed outdoors, on the bench that can result in environmental contamination.Initially the waste material is removed, capping and the changed quartzite, to then reach the material of interest.Indirectly the city residents are exposed to dust containing silica.This contact is characterized as chronic exposure (in long-term of small doses).Thus, this project has verified the knowledge of the residents of the city of São Thomé das Letras, MG on the effects of exposure to silica.It was randomly selected 250 residents of the municipality of São Thomé das Letras-MG.According to the questionnaire applied, it was showed that 63% of the residents know what the silica is, 59% know where it is located, 54% think the dust from their houses may contain silica, 93% have already heard of the disease called silicosis, and among the effects that can cause silicosis the most cited were "shortness of breath, death, lung disease, breathing problems, coughing, fatigue, sand in the lung, among other."Thus it can be concluded that the residents of São Thomé das Letras possess knowledge about silica and the toxic effects of its exposure.
