ResumoSubject UN drawdown. Significance The UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) withdrew on October 15, ending 15 years of US peacekeeping operations in the country. Its departure does not indicate Haiti’s successful transition to stability. Instead, the withdrawal took place amid violent unrest, with protesters calling upon President Jovenel Moise to resign. While Moise has pledged to stay on, his lack of credibility and the extent of opposition to his government raises the prospect of early elections. Impacts Illegal migration into the Dominican Republic is likely to surge as unrest persists in Haiti. International groups have called for dialogue but may shift to support fresh elections if the impasse continues. The suspension of bilateral and multilateral aid, pending resolution of the crisis, will further weigh on Haiti’s economic prospects.
