Die Nanoröhre kann als sechssträngige Helix bestehend aus drei rechtsgängigen und drei linksgängigen helicalen Ketten beschrieben werden und erinnert an eine Drachensäule (siehe Bild). Die MONTs werden durch Alkalimetallionen in Form dieser einzigartigen Nanoröhrenstruktur zusammengehalten.
