ResumoMESOPROTEROZOIC RIFT-SAG BASIN The aim of this work is to presént a raodel for the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Espinhaço Basin in Minas Gerais. The model is supported by integrated sedimentological, paleogeographical, stratigraphical, structural and tectonic studies, carried out at the western and central parts of the southern Serra do Espinhaço.The data allow to recognize four basin evolution phases (pre-rift, rift, transitional and flexural), as well as to characterize the basin as a rift-sag type -a kind of basin that experienced a rift stage with a subsequent downwarping (flexural) stage due to change in the subsidence regime, without breaking-up and evolving to a passive-margin stage.During the rift phase, mechanical subsidence due to lithospheric stretching hás controlled the stratigraphic evolution. The transitional and flexural phases were probably controlled by thermal subsidence due to the thermal contraction of the lithosphere during cooling.
