She's comfy and safe in her bear, walking down the street past bullies, or in school answering questions, riding her bike, or even hanging out in her clubhouse, and the bear is especially helpful at nighttime with its need for a nightlight. If the metaphor isn't clear enough, the illustrations underscore it with little subtlety as the young girl is ensconced safely in a big, burly bear as she makes her way through her day; while it's a sweet premise, the text mostly turns into a list with no real conflict or climax. The gouache, ink, and graphite illustrations strike a visually pleasing balance with the soft linework and dappled texture of the bear paired with the more solid geometry of the real world. This gentle, dreamy read would be most useful for youngsters needing a visualization of how to get through a rough patch or to project confidence.
