Resumo

We are pleased to report that the journal continues to thrive. Molecular Ecology has approximately doubled in size and impact factor over the past 12 years (Fig. 1). It is currently the second largest evolutionary biology journal (419 articles in 2014) and has the fifth highest citation impact factor (6.5) in this category according to Thomson Reuters Web of Science. In terms of overall impact, Molecular Ecology ranks second among Ecology or Evolutionary Biology journals according to Google Scholar's h5 index, which rates journals by cumulative h-index over the past 5 years. Our goal is to maintain the journal's upward trajectory in impact (but not necessarily size) by maintaining an editorial policy that continues to recruit the very best science in our discipline, while welcoming excellent manuscripts from new and emerging areas relevant to Molecular Ecology. Molecular Ecology is a popular publication venue for authors. We received 1364 submissions in 2014 (including resubmissions), with an average time to decision of 37 days. Accepted articles are now made immediately available on the journal website and assigned a DOI, so time to publication after acceptance is a matter of days. Articles then typically appear in the printed version of the journal 1–2 months later. We are sad to report that Professor Harry Smith FRS passed away on February 9 2015. It is a great loss. Harry was the founding editor of Molecular Ecology and served as the managing editor of Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources for many years. He was also a world leader in the area of plant photomorphogenesis, which led to his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society and to his receipt of the Molecular Ecology Prize in 2008. An obituary was published in the May 2015 issue of the journal (Rieseberg 2015). The 2015 Molecular Ecology Prize was awarded to Professor Fred Allendorf of the University of Montana for his lifetime achievements in the fields of molecular ecology and conservation genetics. A biography of Fred and his contributions to the field of molecular ecology can be found on pages 450-453 of this issue. The past decade has seen many unsubstantiated claims made about peer review. Tim used the abundance of data available to a managing editor to shed valuable light on these issues. For example, he showed that the supply of reviewers actually can grow to cope with large increases in submissions (Vines et al. 2009), and that the reviewer burden is heavily skewed towards more prominent academics (Vines 2012). The latter finding prompted ScholarOne to develop their Reviewer Locator tool. Tim also led efforts to integrate data sharing into the publication process, both through his involvement in the Dryad database, and by his efforts in exploring how journals can motivate authors to share their data. Overall, Tim has shown that managing editors are uniquely positioned to drive positive change in both perceptions and best practice within the academic community. Tim will now focus his efforts on managing Axios Review, the company he started 2 years ago, which provides an independent review service for papers in ecology and evolution. We will also miss the talented team Tim put together, especially Jen Gow who has been serving as the Executive Managing Editor. Jen's PhD was in molecular ecology, and she has a good sense of the topics and quality of manuscripts we would like to see published in Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources. Not only was Jen highly efficient, but she also crafted clear, concise, and constructive emails to explain the journal's editorial policies and decisions to authors. There is an art to this, and she is good at it. Lastly, we are pleased to introduce Karen Chambers, who has agreed to take on the Managing Editor position for Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources. Karen holds a PhD in molecular anthropology and completed subsequent postdoctoral stints in molecular ecology, conservation genetics and evolutionary genetics before transitioning to publishing in 2005. Thus, she is ideally suited for managing the journals. During Karen's time with Wiley, she has worked in book commissioning and journal management across the life sciences, including working directly with authors, both pre and post peer-review, to improve the clarity of their submissions and help them address reviewer comments. Tim Vines also started and provided financial support for The Molecular Ecologist blog (http://www.molecularecologist.com/), which is maintained and updated by people interested in the field of molecular ecology. The blog has been a great success and receives ~19 000 visits per month, with an average of just under 12 000 unique visitors. The blog is not affiliated with the publisher of Molecular Ecology, John Wiley and Sons, and the views and opinions of contributors to the blog are their own. To help keep The Molecular Ecologist as an independent voice for the molecular ecology community, we will soon be asking for readers' support. We wish to express our gratitude to our many referees, who are listed at the end of this editorial, for the donation of their time to the journal and to the discipline of molecular ecology. In 2011, Molecular Ecology implemented the Joint Data Archiving Policy (Whitlock et al. 2010), which required that data published in the journal be archived in a public respository. The effectiveness of this policy was recently quantified by Pope et al. (2015), and their results provide useful guidance to our authors and editors with respect to increasing the utility of archived genetic data. Briefly, Pope et al. found that mandatory archiving increased data archiving from 49% of studies (pre-2011) to 98% (2011–present). Unfortunately, about 30% of data sets could not be fully re-created based on information supplied by the authors. Likewise, circa 40% of studies failed to provide geographic coordinates and/or temporal information for sample collections. Thus, authors are strongly urged to archive and link such metadata to published and archived genetic data. The scientific community is rapidly moving toward more open publication, with some funders now requiring that authors make their articles freely available to read, download, and share. To accommodate these requirements, Wiley has made the following options available to authors of Molecular Ecology: For more information on this please visit: http://www.wiley.com/go/funderstatement Molecular Ecology serves as the intellectual home for the community of molecular ecologists through the Molecular Ecologist blog (http://www.molecularecologist.com/), symposia, our News and Views section, special issues, and so forth. Below, we briefly discuss some of the scientific highlights from the past year. So far this year we have published four From the Cover articles. Frankham (2015) conducted a meta-analysis of outcrossing experiments to evaluate the magnitude and consistency of genetic rescue effects in wild species. He reports that small or rare populations almost always benefit from intraspecific gene flow. As Waller (2015) points out in a News and Views Perspective on this manuscript, there are risks associated with genetic rescue attempts, but these can be minimized by careful consideration of the guidelines developed by Frankham et al. (2011) and Frankham (2015). In another From the Cover article, Geraldes et al. (2015) identified a small and recently diverged sex-determining region in poplars. In the companion Perspective, Filatov (2015) notes that this recent divergence is surprising because dioecy in this group of trees is likely old, suggesting that at least one sex determination turnover event has occurred since the divergence of poplars and their sister group, the aspens. Platt et al. (2015) use oak populations to ask whether in addition to genetic changes, epigenetic changes can contribute to adaptive evolution. Their results suggest that methylation polymorphisms ‘as a whole are involved in local adaptation, either directly or through linkage to regions under selection’ (Platt et al. 2015). In discussing these results, Robertson & Richards (2015) highlight opportunities and challenges of next generation sequencing techniques in addressing question in ecological epigenetics. López-Bueno et al. (2015) report the first metagenomic study of RNA viruses in an Antartic lake. In the accompanying Perspective, Cavicchioli & Erdmann (2015) comment that ‘in view of the importance of viruses in Antarctic ecosystems but lack of data describing them, this study represents a significant advance in the field’. In addition to the Perspectives on these four From the Cover articles, we have continued to commission and publish Perspectives on other Original Articles selected among those that our reviewers deemed worthy of being showcased. These highlight some of the topics most popular in the journal, including the use of metagenomic approaches to study community composition (Andújar et al. 2015; Egge et al. 2015; Geisen et al. 2015; Rime et al. 2015), landscape genetics approaches to study dispersal routes (Medley et al. 2015), postcopulatory sexual selection (Gasparini et al. 2015), local adaptation in the face of gene flow (Moody et al. 2015), the role of phenotypic plasticity versus genetic divergence in local adaptation (Dayan et al. 2015), plasticity of immune gene expression (Stutz et al. 2015), the dispersal of adaptive traits among populations (Van Belleghem et al. 2015), speciation (Branco et al. 2015; Fuchs et al. 2015; Mandeville et al. 2015; Mason & Taylor 2015), hybridization (Cahill et al. 2015), and the phylogeography of domestication (Almeida et al. 2015). Theoretical papers provided new useful insights into the dynamics of organelle introgression in organisms with different life cycles (Patten et al. 2015) and reported on a new test of the usefulness of measures of genetic divergence such as FST and GST (Wang 2015). This year also saw the publication of a number of exciting Opinion pieces in our News and Views section. These have, among others, provided thought provoking insights into possible links between disruption of dosage compensation and reproductive isolation (Gallach 2015), as well as common assumptions in population genetics (Meirmans 2015) and molecular evolution (Emerson & Hickerson 2015). They also have assessed the state of the art in the fields of coevolution (Carmona et al. 2015), landscape genetics (Dyer 2015) and phylogeography (Garrick et al. 2015), and highlighted developing fields such as genomic studies of rapid change in the Arctic (Wullschleger et al. 2015). Special issues provide a useful way for the journal to highlight new developments in molecular ecology that we would like to see represented in the journal. In 2015, we published an especially timely special issue that celebrated the 50th anniversary of one of the most important books in evolutionary biology: The Genetics of Colonizing Species (1965) edited by Herbert Baker and G. Ledyard Stebbins. The volume was based on a symposium at Asilomar, California the preceding year and initiated the study of the genetics and evolution of invasive species. To revisit the historical legacy of the meeting and book, Molecular Ecology sponsored a symposium titled, Invasion Genetics: The Baker and Stebbins Legacy. The symposium was held at Asilomar from August 13–15, 2014 and featured a broad range of contributors who captured both the legacy of work on the genetics of colonizing species, and new contributions and perspectives. Associated papers appeared in the Molecular Ecology volume 24, issue 9 in May of 2015 and are highlighted below. The special issue was introduced by Spencer Barrett (2015), who discusses the role of Herbert and Baker and The Genetics of Colonizing Species in founding the field of invasion genetics. Barrett's treatment is a pleasure to read, in part because he knew both protagonists and provides insights into their personalities and interactions and how this shaped the volume, especially its focus on the role of adaptation in invasion success. Four topics were included in the special issue: In a final paper, Bock et al. (2015) provided a comprehensive review of what we know and still don't know about invasion genetics. Bock et al. (2015) conclude by discussing the potential for studies of invasion genetics to reveal the limits to evolution and to stimulate the development of practical strategies to either minimize or maximize evolutionary responses to environmental change. We are grateful for the continued support of the molecular ecology community, as well as the many excellent contributions of our authors, reviewers and editors. Publication of this journal would not be possible without your support, and we are open to suggestions on to how to serve you better. We thank the large number of individuals who have contributed to the field of molecular ecology by reviewing manuscripts for the journal.
