In 1997 he was awarded a Ph.D. in the history of mathematics by Middlesex University. He is now a visiting assistant professor at the University of Virginia. His principal area of research is mathematics and mathematical education in nineteenth-century Britain, with especial reference to London and, in particular, the work of Augustus De Morgan. He has written several papers on Victorian mathematics.
