ResumoResearch Article| September 01 2001 Race, Gender, and the Prison Industrial Complex: California and Beyond Angela Y. Davis; Angela Y. Davis angela y. davis first came to national attention in 1969 when she was removed from her teaching position at UCLA because of her membership in the Communist Party. In 1970, she was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List and was the subject of an intense police search culminating in one of the most publicized trials in recent history. After a sixteen-month incarceration, Davis was acquitted. In 1998, she helped to organize a national conference on prison issues at UC Berkeley, "Critical Resistance: Beyond the Prison Industrial Complex," which is the focus of her current scholarship and activism. Her most recent publications include The Angela Davis Reader and Blues Legacies and Black Feminism. Search for other works by this author on: This Site Google Cassandra Shaylor Cassandra Shaylor cassandra shaylor is an activist lawyer and the Co-Director of Justice Now, a California-based teaching law center. At Justice Now she trains community organizers, law students and undergraduates to provide legal services to women in prison in conjunction with building community-based media, policy, and education campaigns. She is also a doctoral candidate in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California at Santa Cruz where she is writing a dissertation on women, race, and the prison industrial complex.
