New Periodicals Mallory Sajewski This semiannual column selectively lists new periodicals; describes their objectives, formats, and contents; and provides information about special issues; title and format changes, mergers, and cessations. The following resources were frequently consulted when assembling this column: Music Periodicals Database (MPD; http://www.proquest.com/products-services/iimp_ft.html), Music Index (MI; https://www.ebscohost.com/academic/music-index), RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, (RILM; http://www.rilm.org), OCLC Worldcat and Ulrich's Periodical Directory (www.ulrichsweb.com/ulrichsweb/), and the Directory of Open Access Journals (http://www.doaj.org). All Web sites were accessed on 20 March 2017 unless otherwise specified. NEW TITLES Journal of Creative Music Systems. Edited by Steven Jan and Eduardo Miranda. Published biannually. Vol. 1, Issue 1 (September 2016). ISSN 2399–7656. Online format. http://jcms.org.uk/index.html. The Journal of Creative Music Systems is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal in the new field of the Computer Simulation of Musical Creativity. As such, this journal focuses on "computer systems which generate, perform, or analyse music, and which either demonstrate a distinct degree of creativity or which shed light on the nature of creativity." Journal contents are divided into four categories: articles, research reports, reviews, and tutorials. While articles are substantial and provide a major contribution to the knowledge, research reports are shorter and describe research that is still in a preliminary phase. Reviews cover books, articles, and events such as conferences, and tutorials illustrate new technologies in the field. As it is an online journal, the editors encourage authors to take advantage of the opportunity to include multimedia elements such as sound recordings, videos, graphics, and hyperlinks. The inaugural issue features an opening editorial, two articles, and three research reports. The first article presents a new adaptive modular melodic harmonization system, while the second article builds upon and ties together previous work on the musification of complex biological or biomedical data. The research reports discuss the technical development of a Vocal Tract Organ, the significance of temporal information in the measurement of musical similarity, and a proposed framework for sonic creativity through the use of contemporary technology and computational research. There are not any reviews or tutorials in the inaugural issue. The Journal of Creative Music Systems is published biannually by the University of Huddersfield Press. All content is free to access and is published under a Creative Commons license that permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction. At the time of this writing, Journal of Creative Music Systems is not indexed in Ulrich's, nor is it included in the Directory of Open Access Journals. However, a bibliographic record is available in WorldCat (OCLC #961477608). SPECIAL JOURNAL ISSUES American Music Vol. 34, No. 2 (Summer 2016): Music in Four Distinct American Communities. This special issue does not include an editorial but the four research articles address topics including German American singing festivals, Catholic music in New Jersey, the Oklahoma Senior Follies, and Goldenrod Music Distribution of Michigan. Included are four book reviews. Contemporary Music Review Vol. 35, No. 1 (February 2016): Gender, Creativity and Education in Digital Musics and Sound Art. Guest edited by Georgina Born and Kyle Devine, who intended the issue to examine the "politics of gender in relation to high education, creative practices and historical processes in electronic music, computer music and sound art." In their thorough editorial and guide to the issue, they advised readers to read the articles alongside Born and Devine's "Music Technology, Gender...
