ResumoThe English dancer, choreographer and teacher, Keith Lester, was born in 1904 and educated at St Paul's School. He studied with Serafina Astafieva and Nicholas Legat, and made his stage début in Basil Dean's 7923 production of Flecker's Hassan which had choreography by Michel Fokine. Keith Lester later danced with Lydia Kyasht, with Tamara Karsavina on her European tours, and with Olga Spessivtzeva, notably in a season at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, when Fokine revived several works for this illustrious ballerina. In 1934 Lester joined the Ida Rubinstein ballet company which had been active in 1929 and again in 1931, and was now revived for a season at the Paris Opera. This was the last season in which Rubinstein appeared as a dancer; her company was then disbanded and Lester returned to London where he joined the newly formed Markova-Dolin Ballet as dancer and choreographer, staging David, Pas de Quatre, and other ballets. He subsequently worked for the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park, for the London Ballet, and in 1940 formed the Arts Theatre Ballet. For many years he worked as producer and choreographer for the Windmill Theatre, before becoming principal teacher at the Royal Academy of Dancing in 1965, and Director of its Teacher Training Course for ten years. The following description of his work with the Ida Rubinstein company in 1934 comes from his unpublished memoirs and is given here in a slightly shortened form. [Clement Crisp]
