ResumoThis past year has been a momentous one for The Journal of Comparative Neurology, as we moved into electronic submission and review of manuscripts as of May 2004. Because of our position as the leading journal in neuroanatomy, our focus has always been on image quality, and hence JCN delayed moving to an electronic platform for reviewing manuscripts until we were sure we could maintain image integrity. We only made the transition to the Manuscript Central 3.1 system after the Journal of Neuroscience, for which it was developed, had demonstrated the ability of this system to handle high-resolution images. The result has been gratifying, although there have been some bumps in the road along the way. We now receive about 95% of our submissions electronically, and as our first completely electronic papers begin to show up in the Journal, we are pleased that we have so far been able to maintain image quality. This ability has been due in part to limiting figure submissions to high resolution formats (e.g., tif, psd, or eps files), in part to sophisticated software that allows the reviewers and editors to view the figures at full resolution as they would appear on a printed page, and in part to our requirement that authors submit a set of photographic quality prints after the paper has been accepted, so that the publisher can match the output of the presses to the exact image brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation that the authors intend. However, we are now facing the largest and perhaps most challenging technological issue in our evolution. As of January 2005, a large number of major libraries are moving away from storing print copies of the Journal (and most other journals), and henceforth will provide only electronic access. This move, which is driven both by economics and by the reality that the vast majority of readers access JCN online, not in print, will only intensify in the future. It is not clear, in fact, how long publishers will produce print journals at all, if there are only a few print subscribers, as the fixed cost of print publication are high. With an ever smaller base, it may be that within a few years print publication of journals in general, and JCN in particular, may become extinct. How then can we maintain the Journal's international reputation for high quality reproduction of photomicrographs when working with a format (the Wiley InterScience website) that uses HTML and pdf files, which inherently involve lossy compression and limited image file size? The publisher and editors are working to implement a solution during the coming year that will allow readers of the electronic version of the Journal to have access to images at the high level of resolution that they have come to enjoy and expect in The Journal of Comparative Neurology. In the coming year, we intend to implement a process that will allow our readers to continue to enjoy the highest level of image quality possible in the electronic format that has become the de facto medium for publication. At this time of year, we also have our annual changes in Editorial Board composition. Editorial Board positions at JCN are four year appointments, so that each year one quarter of the positions expire, and new members must be selected. The Editors vote on the new members, based upon the contributions of the members of our community, both as reviewers and as authors. An important criterion is the ability of referees to return high quality reviews on time. Maintaining our current mean time for decisions on new manuscripts, which runs about 34 days, is critical to the mission of the Journal, and we can only do this with the help of every reviewer. We are often asked by readers about our Board selection criteria: our answer is that if they wish to be on the Board, they should offer their services as reviewers to the Editors in their field, and then make sure to return thoughtful and critical reviews promptly. This year, three members will be retiring from the Board. We thank Hendrik Groenewegen, Eve Marder, and Carla Shatz for their contributions to the Journal, and we hope that they will continue as valued members of our community, and may serve again on the Board in the future. In their place, the Editors have appointed three new members, Alexander McDonald, Susan Sesack, and Yoshio Shigenaga. We welcome them to the Board. Five members, Charles Greer, David Hopkins, Harvey Karten, Elliott Mufson, and Anton Reiner, were re-elected to an additional term, and we are grateful for their continuing contributions. We also want to thank all of the reviewers, who have made possible the continued high level of review that characterizes JCN (despite occasional electronic travails). We look forward to another exciting year, as we continue to navigate the electronic publishing world.
