American Cillege of Occupational and Environmental Medicine The 2012 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC), the 97th annual meeting of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), will be held from April 29 through May 2, 2012, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles, Calif. This year's unique schedule begins with general sessions on Sunday, April 29, 2012, and the Exhibit Hall Opening Reception and Poster Presentations that evening. Exhibits will run through Tuesday afternoon with a complimentary lunch served in the Exhibit Hall on Monday. Conference highlights include the following: Preview of ACOEM's new Idea MarkplaceTM that will officially launch in early May. The Marketplace is being created in response to member requests and will provide a unique way for members to quickly locate information on-line (eg, position papers, articles, Webinars, charts) relating to more than 30 of the most current topics in occupational and environmental medicine (OEM). The platform also provides new opportunities for members to share published and/or unpublished works with other ACOEM members and, in some cases, with the general public. As more members contribute their works, the Idea Marketplace™ will become increasingly useful and become the “go to” site for OEM physicians seeking scientific, clinical, and/or practice management information. The Opening General Session, scheduled on Monday morning, April 30, 2012, will include presentation of the annual awards followed by the Sappington Memorial Lecture given by Arthur L. Kellerman, MD, MPH, Director of RAND Corporation and a renowned leader in health care services and policy. On Tuesday, May 1, 2012, the day's events include continued sessions in all six conference tracks—OEM Clinical; Management and Administration in OEM; Environmental Health and Risk Management; Regulatory, Legal, Military, and Governmental OEM; OEM Education and Scientific Research; and Other. The ACOEM Annual Membership Meeting and Breakfast will take place on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 (registration deadline for this event is noon Monday). The new class of Fellows will be introduced and the Outstanding Achievement Award will be bestowed. In addition, Charles Rosen, MD, President of the Association for Medical Ethics, Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Founding Director of the Spine Center at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, will present the William B. Patterson Memorial Lecture on Ethics. Conference related course offerings include five pre-conference courses (MRO Comprehensive, Occupational Board Review, Foundations in Occupational Medicine Segment 2, Health and Productivity Management Clinic, Spirometry Testing in Occupational Health) on April 27–28, 2012, and two post-conference courses (Work Disability Prevention for Clinicians: Mastering Your Role in the SAW/RTW Process and CAOHC Professional Supervisor) on May 3, 2012. The AOHC full conference registration fee will increase by $100 after March 30 and one-day conference registration fees will increase by $50. Visit www.acoem.org for additional information and on-line registration or call ACOEM at 847/818-1800, ext 374, with questions or to register by phone. The New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (NECOEM), an ACOEM component society, will hold a dinner meeting March 29, 2012, at the Beechwood Hotel in Worcester, Mass. Medical Aspects of Disability: Addressing Limitations, Restrictions, and Expected Functional Capacity in Chronic Pain will be presented by J. D. Beavers, MD, Edward Alvino, MD, and Jay Rosenfeld, MD. A May 10 NECOEM Dinner Meeting highlighting the topic Alternative Modalities in Returning Veterans with PTSD to the Workforce, presented by Candace Green, will be held at the Cumberland Club in Portland, Maine. For more details, contact Dianne Plantamura, NECOEM Executive Director, 22 Mill Street, Groveland, MA 01834; telephone: 978/373-5597; e-mail: [email protected]; Web site: www.necoem.org. The Oklahoma College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OCOEM), an ACOEM component society, will hold its annual business meeting April 10, 2012, at the Johnny Carrino Restaurant, Oklahoma City, Okla. For additional information, contact Karen Ryan, MD, OCOEM President, at 918/594-6520, or by e-mail at [email protected]. Workshop on Research Translation With Vulnerable Worker Populations will be held on June 7–8, 2012, at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., hosted by the Center for Construction Research and Training in conjunction with the Colorado Injury Control and Research Center, High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety, Institute of Applied Prevention Research, and the Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center. This event is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since workforces are becoming increasingly diverse (eg, culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age), the barriers to effectively reach these vulnerable groups regarding occupational safety and health interventions has become difficult for public health professionals. Academic leaders and researchers specialized in research translation and dissemination and vulnerable worker populations will provide hands-on workshops with a focus on occupational safety and health. Symposia and presentations will accompany the workshops over this 2-day period.
