Wordsong/Highlights, 2017 [32p] ISBN 978-1-59078-936-0 $17.95 Ad Gr. 3-5 Twenty-one poems invite children to consider the worlds—natural and manmade—beneath their feet. Some, like “Seeds,” are child-accessible metaphors (“this period at the end/ of winter’s sentence/ writes its way up/ through the dull slate of soil”) or quirky mini lessons, such as mysterious corn root noise (“But with a strange/ and clicking sound/ their taproots speak/ beneath the ground”). Others, though, never rise far beyond jingle: “I like the rumbling, jumbling cars/ along the long railway./ I only wish that I could ride/ the subway trains/ all day.” Masse’s digital artwork provides literal interpretations of the verses as it follows a white boy and black girl exploring underground milieus; shifting perspectives add a sense of playfulness, but the figures are occasionally stiff. Notes “Both Scientific and Personal” for each [End Page 338] poem round out this title, offering extra information, conversation starters, and possibly inspiration for children to write about their own subterranean interests.
