ResumoThe HIDRALERTA is a forecast, warning and risk assessment system for overtopping/flooding of coastal and port areas which uses sea-wave measurements/estimates of sea-waves to evaluate overtopping/flooding in those areas. The calculation of the mean overtopping discharge over a maritime structure is made through neural network based tools and/or empirical formulas, which are unable to define the spatial distribution of the flow behind the structure. This paper presents the application to the harbour/bay of Praia da Vitória, Azores, of a fast method that uses a GIS tool to model such spatial distribution. A relationship was established between inundation level and wave overtopping volume, using a digital terrain model. This work represents a first step for developing a risk map associated to wave overtopping.
