ResumoSubject Haiti unrest. Significance Major anti-corruption protests across Haiti in late November have increased pressure on President Jovenel Moise, with calls mounting for his resignation. Moise is suffering from widespread perceptions that he has not done enough to crack down on corruption, particularly in relation to a major PetroCaribe financing scandal that broke in late 2017. Impacts Protests may force further ministerial changes, but cosmetic reshuffling is unlikely to ease popular discontent. Rising insecurity could hit the Dominican Republic in the form of increased illegal migration and cross-border crime. The violence will deter all but essential travel to Haiti, particularly in light of US travel warnings being issued.
