Greek Myths; illus. by Sarah Young. Candlewick, 2010. 168p. ISBN 978-0-7636-5111-4 $18.99 R* Gr. 5-10. See this month’s Big Picture, p. 267, for review. Sixteen Greek myths—most well known, but with a couple of less frequently told tales included—are retold here with stylistic grace well matched to beautiful visual presentation. Careful attention has been paid to organization, as Turnbull divides her stories under three headings: Earth, the Heavens, and the Underworld; Monsters and Heroes; Gods and Mortals. In each section two or more stories are organically related through a common character. Meleager's boar hunt, at which Atalanta draws first blood, leads into the more familiar tale of her footrace; Arethusa's flight in the form of a stream through the Underworld makes a surprising segue into the Persephone tale; Pan's unrequited desire for the nymph Syrinx connects with the comical romp that results in Midas sporting ass' ears. Turnbull narrates with a vibrancy reminiscent of Geraldine McCaughrean, touched with a stateliness all her own. Sarah Young's mixed-media artwork—regal, yet sensuous compositions in richly textured earthtones touch with gold—is sufficiently representational to assist younger readers with context clues, and sufficiently elegant and sophisticated to satisfy seasoned readers. Many households take pride in a particularly well-told or attractively illustrated volume of nursery rhymes or fairy tales; this rendition of classical mythology may become an equally beloved title.
