Resumo

Carlos Fuentes, one of Mexico’s most prolific writers and branded under the Latin American Boom, has received much attention throughout the years as a novelist. However, the work introduced to Hollywood in 1989 with the adaptation of his novel Gringo viejo (1985) did not receive the same attention. Rather, it suffered the consequences of adaptation and gained many critics in the United States mainstream, which prevented him from reproducing the status he gained within the boom in the Spanish-speaking world. Carlos Fuentes’s affection for film can be traced to his two nonfiction books, Myself with Others (1988) and Personas (2012). In both, Fuentes reflects on his life as a writer, highlighting the importance of cinematography to his work. This article marks the relation between Aura and Cortázar, along with Fuentes’s friendship with Luis Buñuel. This article brings proof of the inception of his filmic passion and the deception brought by the rapid deceit of success in Hollywood of the late 1980s.
