ResumoNew samarium β-diketonate complexes comprising nitrogen-heterocyclic auxiliary moiety were prepared and characterized spectroscopically. Detailed inspection of complexes has suggested the octacoordinated environment about samarium ion and isostructural behavior of complexes. The samarium ion is coordinated via carbonyl oxygen of diketone ligand and nitrogen atoms of neutral ligand. The photoluminescent (PL) features of the complexes were explored in powder as well as in dimethylsulphoxide solvent. By examining the emission spectra, the sensitizing nature of ligands was revealed. The newly synthesized complexes have shown red emission around 648 nm due to electric dipole transition comparable to 4G5/2→6H9/2. Optical and electronic band gap were found in the range of semiconductor material i.e. 3-4 eV. The photophysical investigations and colorimetric analysis have demonstrated that these complexes could be utilized in electroluminescent devices, lasers, displays and single magnet molecules.
