ResumoFounded in 1953, the Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (KATRD) is an academic society with 69 years of history. As of March 2022, there are 1900 members of KATRD. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, KATRD held a total of 40 conferences/symposia between April 2020 and March 2022. Most of them had a hybrid format of online and face-to-face attendance. There are 1000 Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) en bloc members in KATRD. Within KATRD, there are seven local branches and 15 study groups. Each study group actively performs scientific research. For example, the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) study group recently published a multicentre study to identify the respiratory pathogens associated with exacerbation.1 The asthma study group published many studies regarding asthma–COPD overlap.2-4 The pulmonary rehabilitation study group is currently performing a multicentre prospective trial to evaluate the efficacy of N-acetylcysteine inhalation in patients with COPD. In 2020, the cough study group has revised the Korean Cough Guideline.5 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases (trd) is an official journal of KATRD. It is one of the longest-standing scientific journals in Korea and currently indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index. The Journal Citation Indicator of trd is currently 43 among 96 respiratory journals. The Editorial Board is composed of leading global pulmonologists. The years of 2020 and 2021 were very difficult for everyone around the world amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The end of the prolonged pandemic is in sight as many countries including Korea adopted ‘living with coronavirus’ policies to return to normal. Although the spread of the Omicron variant heightened concerns over a return to tougher social distancing rules, we are hoping that things will improve and are preparing to host the APSR 2022 Congress as a live, in-person event in November 2022. Finally! Four years after Seoul was selected as the host city of the 26th Congress of the APSR at the 23rd APSR executive committee meeting and 14 years after Seoul last hosted the APSR in 2009, the APSR 2022 Congress will be held during 17–20 November 2022 at COEX in Seoul, Korea. We look forward to meeting every one of you from around the world at the APSR 2022 Seoul Congress. The APSR Congress has been held annually since 1988, positioning itself as a leading conference in both the fields of respirology and medicine. The APSR 2022 Seoul Congress will be attended by more than 3000 doctors, nurses, pulmonary function technicians and pulmonary rehabilitation therapists involved in the treatment of respiratory diseases from 50 countries around the world. Under the main theme of ‘Above and Beyond’, the congress will offer (in close consultation with the Central Congress Committee and APSR Assembly Troika) a variety of academic programmes such as Plenary Lectures, Meet the Professor, Pros and Cons Symposium, a latest thesis presentation session and industry symposia through which you can learn from prominent scholars. The Congress will cover a wide range of current topics that you can relate to, with opportunity to express your opinions on how to make the congress a prominent event and further advance the field of respiratory diseases. We are also creating unique activities you can do in Seoul to turn the APSR 2022 Seoul Congress into an exciting event, full of fun programmes that will help us bond together and get to know each other better. Seoul, the host city of APSR 2022, is the capital of Korea and is known as a clean and safe city (Figure 1). Seoul boasts an exquisite blend of old and new, where beautiful, historic palaces are nestled in the city centre right next to modern high-rises. From expansive green parks in many corners of the city where you can heal your body and mind to K-Road at the heart of K-Trend where you can feel the vibrancy of the city, you will be pleasantly surprised by the charms of Seoul during your stay. Activities include ‘Joint Security Area & Demilitarized Zone Tour’, one of the most sought-after tours among foreign travellers visiting Korea, ‘Traces of BTS in Seoul's Hot Places’ to experience Hallyu, a cultural wave unique to Korea, ‘Are You a Big Fan of Bong Joon-ho Too? Go on a Bong Hive Tour Now!’, K-POP dance experience and a ‘Food Zone’ offering Korean street food to food lovers. Seoul in the night is just as vibrant and beautiful as in the daytime. You can also enjoy a cruise crossing the Han River under the colourfully lit bridges. We hope that you will immerse yourself in the charms of the APSR 2022 Seoul Congress in a city where you can experience the rich cultural heritage as well as technological prowess of Korea. We will make thorough preparations to ensure a safe stay for all visitors to Seoul. We hope you will have a memorable trip with your family in Korea, one of the world's safest countries.
