ResumoThis article examines the representation of rural Spain in contemporary cinema, focusing on feature films from the last decade. Using the theoretical frame of Environmental Studies, I analyze the movies Cenizas del cielo (2008) by José Antonio Quirós and Amama (2015) by Asier Altuna. I attempt to answer the question of to what extent Spanish cinema is able to dialogue with the problems that affect the environment today. The ideas of, among others, Jason Moore and Rob Nixon, are especially helpful to answer this question. It is my claim that in contrast to the films that perpetuate the mistrust traditionally raised by a rural space conceived as an antagonist of Modernity, there are other films that look to the future and denounce pressing environmental problems, offering a more positive vision of nature without renouncing the legacy of the cultural tradition.
