Autores ResumoHeinrich Böll's insistence that his novel Ansichten eines Clowns was the continuation of the journal labyrinth is subjected to close scrutiny. The journal's relevance for Böll is analysed in detail, while the novel's genesis and development show a distinct movement away from the original concept. Böll's aesthetic is shown to have much in common with that of Robbe-Grillet, and his increasing fascination with the nouveau roman suggests an alternative context, the labyrinth motif in novels by Robbe-Grillet and Butor, thus placing the novel in the context of literary modernism, an aspect of Böll's literary output which is frequently overlooked.
