ResumoSignificance Differences between the two main Kurdish parties, the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), have been exacerbated by a power vacuum since the death of PUK leader Jalal Talabani in 2017, and by ongoing political tensions in Baghdad. Impacts Lahur Talabani, although stripped of his powers in the PUK, will continue to intervene in Kurdish politics. The KDP and PUK are likely to submit their own presidential candidates once the process for forming a new Iraqi government is agreed. The New Generation Party is likely to increase its seat numbers in the next Kurdish regional election.
